New CD: Labyrinth

The Next CD

It's been quite a year, we've added Pat on the bass and he's learned the old album, a bunch of covers and re-learned a few from Tony's CD. So far we've played live 5 times - a new record and during the year 8 songs have been written and rehearsed. At our last gig we played 6 of them and the last rehearsal firmed up the remaining 2.

Looking forward to rehearsal this Sunday, Tony and I did a run through tonight on the intro to song 8 (a mighty prog inspired epic) and we can't wait to take this bunch of songs into the studio.

Cheers,
Ian

Song Contest

A local CD pressing company Replicat has been running a song contest with recording related prizes for the last few years - this is our first attempt.

We've taken New Place from our CD and used a live performance from Gertrude's Brown Couch as the submission. Attempts to synch the CD audio to the live video we're 100% successful, so we went with the less pristine audio version from the live show, it's a nice performance though and initial comments from other musicians suggest the song is likely to be well received.

I had a sobering experience at work this week when 7 out to 7 people I asked to vote (via Facebook) said they didn't use it!

Here's the link
You need to log into Facebook, vote and share.

Wish us luck, the 2nd CD is getting closer and it would be great to win a prize like "free replication".

Anyway, having fun.

The Fox Hotel

We were all pretty happy with the recent gig at The Fox Hotel in Collingwood on Sunday. It's a great little pub with really cool atmosphere. Not to mention an amazing PA - Turbosounds - think Roll Royce of Pas. Very nice sound.

Clearly none of Pat's mates like rugby - I reckon they all turned up and filled the pub. For me this was the best gig we've done yet. A good crowd in a nice pub, already full of local drinkers. Tony got them going and even had a few people waving their lighters "countdown" style.

Hoping for an invite back - we deserve it, they must have done heaps over the bar.

Here's the YouTube playlist version of the DVD we gave out FREE on the day.

A great afternoon/evening.

Gertrude's Brown Couch - August 2012

I just remembered a funny thing from our last Gertrude's gig. We were all set up to go when Tony takes a wander past me (keys) to the back of the stage. Just as I was momentarily distracted, thinking he's heading my way, Stu hits the sticks together for the first song. 1, 2, 1,2,3,4 and what!!!! We're playing. I caught up, but it was kind of terrifying for a few milliseconds.

Ah, the joys and challenges of playing live - I love it! Really!

Blogging again

It's been a hectic few months involving a change of job for me and some health issues for Mrs R, so blogging has been neglected.

We had a great gig back in August with Bruce Pumpa & the Flying Sourcerers plus Jeremy P Martin at Gertrude's Brown Couch.  Some mix ups with the times and the bands sat around for a while waiting for the place to open. No matter, big crowd and lots of fun.

It was the first time we played all the rehearsed tracks (6) from the up coming next CD, pretty pleasing really. Nailing that "breakdown" in March Right in was very satisfying. We also played a song by Birchy and Tony - Carry me home - nice tune boys and a first for Chris.

The DVD from the prior gig is back, thanks to Thom and the boys. We will give these some YouTube AirPlay soon.

Mu-Theory Covers

2012 is shaping up as an exciting year for Mu-Theory. Tony is writing new songs at an even faster rate than usual, we've got 3 newies just about bedded down and hope to audition a couple at our next gig. The 50/50 covers/originals mix is looking good too, several new cover songs ready to go.

Take Me To the River turned out to be a lot of fun to play and we've published our version on CD Baby.

Take Me To The River

I'll Be Around

Saturday 28 April 2012

OK, we're excited about this. Yes, Mu-Theory are all about writing, performing and recording original rock music, but playing live we do a selection of cover songs.

We recorded our gig at  Gertrude's Brown Couch (wow that's long, how about GBC)  in April and we decided to publish two of them.

We're calling it a "Double A Side" since we like them both, but since they're MP3s I'm not sure which would be A anyway :)

Take Me To The River, that classic Al Green R&B number covered by many other famous bands including The Commitments, Talking Heads and many more. Our version leans towards The Commitments - minus the brass section

I'll Be Around, first released by The Spinners in 1972, our first listen was the legendary Aussie singer Doug Parkinson who has inspired our version

Best of all, they're FREE from our page at CD Baby http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/MuTheory just register (it's free too).

Don't forget to leave some feedback telling others how much you enjoyed them!

We're aiming for another gig at GBC mid June - stay tuned.

We decided to record the gig at Gertrude's Brown Couch and have combined the mix with three iPhone audience videos.

The Basin Music Festival 2012

Well I have to say the 12 noon on Sunday isn't the optimal spot for an audience, but this year the venue was well organised and the sound guy knew what he was doing. This was Mu-Theory's first gig with our new bass player Pat Ferdinands and when I arrived Pat had the hall to himself and was putting the bass amp through it's paces.

A small but dedicated audience (thanks Mum!) and a really good Mu-Theory performance to start the year.  We finally got some decent video only to find that the sound levels on the recording we distorted rather badly.  Good live video seems to be eluding the band. Might be time to call in some favours!

Gertrude's Brown Couch - gig

About a month ago I went to see my mate Ben Rogers play at the Fitzroy venue Gertrude's Brown Couch www.gertrudes.com.au. This is an inner city venue and I figured that it would be good for Mu-Theory to play there. After a few days of too and fro with the venue we ended up putting together an evening of music with some other bands we know - including Ben Rogers' Instrumental Asylum, Jessie Sparks - a former jazz singer with one of my earlier bands Strange Fruit, and Ben roped in The Volcaniks for some surf music.

With a vocal duo, 2 surf instrumental bands and Mu-Theory it was an eclectic line-up but by all reports the gig worked well.  We recorded our set and I'm mixing at the moment. Hoping for some decent iPhone video to combine with some of the tracks ...

Lot's of fun!

CD Review

Another first in a succession of firsts for Mu-Theory... Our first review

Here's a quote, but read the full review at www.mu-theory.com/reviews
Mu-Theory has a wonderful knack for mixing elements of jazz, blues and rock into a smooth blend of original and unique music that is performed with abundant skill.  Add to this the fact that the sound quality is phenomenal and the songwriting is strong, and you have winner all the way around.  This album is a testament to the talent, creative diversity and artistic vision of Mu-Theory and listeners will not be disappointed.
